Crime Watch is a weekly series culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Monday, July 5, at 12:13 a.m.
Santa Monica officers were at the corner of Ocean and Bicknell avenues talking to a resident when they heard a vehicle coming toward them at a high rate of speed. As officers flagged down the vehicle it screeched to a stop past the limit line of a nearby stop sign. Officers approached the driver and asked to see her driver’s license at which time she said she did not have one. Officers noted that the driver appeared to be agitated and unable to follow instructions. Due to her symptoms, officers believed she was under the influence of a controlled substance. The driver was arrested and during a subsequent search officers located a glass cylinder that contained a white substance which tested positive for cocaine. The driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence, driving without a license, a probation violation and a warrant. She was identified as Maia Campbell, 33, of Los Angeles. Her bail was set as $36,000.
Sunday, July 4, at 9:35 p.m.
Officers responded to the corner of Fourth Street and Pico Boulevard regarding a traffic accident. Upon arrival, officers talked to one of the drivers, who appeared to be intoxicated. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence that resulted in injury to others. He was identified as Tyler Brunk, 24, of Marina del Rey. His bail was set at $10,000.
Tuesday, July 6, at 4:44 p.m.
Officers were making a periodic check at a location in the 1200 block of Lincoln Boulevard when they discovered a trespasser on the property. Officers determined that the suspect was on probation for narcotic use. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was in possession of syringes and other materials used for injecting drugs. The suspect was arrested for possession of narcotic paraphernalia and a probation violation. He was identified as Julien McGovern, 21, a transient. His bail was set at $10,000.
Wednesday, July 7, at 7:41 p.m.
Officers responded to the 2000 block of Pico Boulevard (Pizza Hut) regarding a person trying to assault a delivery driver. Upon arrival, officers were advised by the victim that she was driving her personal vehicle into the restaurant’s parking lot when she stopped to allow the suspect to cross the street. As he walked in front of her car, he kicked the front and side of the vehicle. The suspect advised the victim if she called the police he would kill her. The victim drove into the lot and asked a co-worker to call the police. At that time, the suspect entered the business and struck the phones on the counter to prevent the employees from calling for help. The suspect then fled the location. Officers located the suspect a short distance away and placed him under arrest for damage to power lines (phones), vandalism and assault and battery. He was identified as Ronny Makabi, 28, of Encino. His bail was set at $20,000.
Thursday, July 8, at 7:52 a.m.
Officers responded to the 700 block of Broadway (Vons) regarding a subject refusing to leave. Upon arrival, officers observed two employees holding a suspect on the ground. The employees stated that the suspect entered the business carrying a large suitcase and large bag. Employees advised the suspect that he could not enter the store with the items and would need to leave them outside. The suspect became confrontational and was asked to leave the business. The suspect then went outside and stood in front of the business, refusing to leave. He later returned to the store with an umbrella and threatened the employees. The suspect then struck the victim and kicked him several times before store employees detained him. The suspected was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. He was identified as Benjamin Saunders, 24, a transient. His bail was set at $30,000.00.
Friday, July 9, at 4:06 a.m.
Officers were patrolling the area of 11th Street and California Avenue when they observed a subject riding a bicycle and pulling another bicycle. Officers stopped the suspect as he did not have a headlamp on either of the bicycles. The suspect was also carrying a large surfboard and carrying case. Further investigation revealed that the suspect was also in possession of a personal music device and a projector. Officers were able to determine that the suspect had just committed a burglary in the 800 block of 12th Street. Officers were able to return some of the property that the suspect had in his possession to the victim on 12th Street. The suspect was arrested for burglary, possession of stolen property and a probation violation. He was identified as Brock Frein, 23, of Los Angeles. He was not eligible for bail.
