A man was taken into custody Friday afternoon at Virginia Avenue Park following a fight during which he and another man brandished knives.
Santa Monica police were notified around 2:30 p.m. of an altercation at the park, where two men were involved in a verbal altercation that had become physical, Lt. Saul Rodriguez said.
Arriving officers found one man who was packing up his belongings and another who was still holding a knife. The latter refused to comply with officers’ instructions and grew combative, according to Rodriguez.
The suspect, whose name was not released, resisted police even after being tased multiple times. He was eventually detained and taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez could not confirm whether or not the men are homeless or were under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident.
One officer sustained a minor injury, according to Rodriguez, who did not disclose any further details about the nature of the injury.
Information about how many officers responded was not immediately available. More than half a dozen officers were seen in the area after the incident, and Rodriguez said detectives were also called to the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
