SAMOHI — Luke Zelon has some serious thinking to do.
The Santa Monica High School senior linebacker has been attracting the attention of college scouts from across the country. The hard-hitting Zelon has received offers from Washington State, Iowa State and Harvard. He’s even drawn the eyes of recruiters at both UCLA and USC as well.
Besides preparing for Valencia High School this week, Zelon has been practicing for the SAT. As far as favorites, Zelon said he’s keeping an open mind toward every school.
“I’d love to stay near home,” Zelon said. “I know the area well, but it doesn’t bother me if I (leave for school).”
He has yet to make an official visit, but he’s considering a trip to Harvard in January.
While he has been primarily recruited as a linebacker, some schools consider him a prospect at a number of positions. The 6-foot-3, 219 pounder often lines up as a full back and has made his share of catches as a tight end during his career at Samohi.
Officials react to stabbing<p>
In the wake of a stabbing following last week’s football game between Samohi and Venice, school officials were quick to calm the community and ensure safety at future events.
Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District Superintendent Tim Cuneo said that security will remain the same and has worked with officials from the Santa Monica Police Department to evaluate the need for any changes. The next home game is scheduled for Oct. 16 against Morningside High School.
“We’re monitoring this very carefully,” Cuneo said. “We want to make sure our kids are safe and we want people to go and enjoy the game.”
The stabbing, which occurred as fans exited Santa Monica College’s Corsair Field, continues to be investigated by the SMPD. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and is expected to fully recover. A suspect has yet to be apprehended.
Samohi’s foes start strong<p>
The Ocean League season is still weeks off, but it appears some of Samohi’s league rivals are off to fast starts.
Both Inglewood and Culver City have begun the season 3-0. The rest of the league hasn’t fared as well. Samohi and Beverly Hills are both 1-2 and Morningside is 1-3. Hawthorne is 0-3.
Samohi opens league play Oct. 16 against Hawthorne at SMC’s Corsair Field.
