SAMOHI — The search to replace Debbie Skaggs as the Vikings’ head softball coach continues.
The search has been on since the end of the school year with few applications coming in to the office of Daniel Escalera, Santa Monica High School’s new athletic director, he said.
While the position was initially for a walk-on coach, who wouldn’t teach at the school, Escalera said that the departures of a few faculty members have opened up teaching positions in the math and science departments, giving him added incentive to attract a coach.
“It’s been going really slow,” Escalera said.
The opportunity to offer a potential candidate a teaching position should make the search a bit easier, but Escalera said that he can’t guarantee that an applicant would be extended a teaching offer.
Under Skaggs, the team won its first California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section title in the sport this past season. Skaggs leaves the team after 24 years in the dugout. Although, she plans to remain at Samohi as a teacher.
