February Main Street/Pico Blog
It’s been a busy January at the markets. We are so very grateful for your dedication even on the not so sunny, sometimes rainy days. It means a lot to farmers who rain or shine, bring you farm fresh produce they need to harvest no matter what the weather because those fruits and veggies just keep on growing.
February is an excellent time to honor the most inspiring and dedicated people on the planet. I am forever in awe of the farmers I have had the pleasure to know and others that I continue to meet. Against all odds, they continue to grow and produce the most incredible farm products for their communities. Ask a farmer about soil health and how sustainable farming creates an environment where diversity exists, and micro-organisms thrive and then bring home some delicious greens to eat and see for yourself. After all, you are what you eat.
Don’t forget to check out the Virginia Ave Park Greens Festival celebrating Black History Month on Saturday, February 24 after you shop the Pico Farmers Market. The event will be held in the park and features booths, music, and cooking demos. Make a day of it. don’t forget to check out the Virginia Ag Park Greens Festival on Saturday, February 24 after you shop the Pico Farmers Market. Make a day of it.
So, it’s also Valentine’s month. We encourage you to buy lots of nutritious produce from your local farmers market so that none of our amazing farmers have anything to take back to their farm at the end of the day. I can’t think of a better way to tell a farmer, the hero of the hour, that you appreciate all the hard work they have put into growing a rainbow of beautiful produce for you, their community.
And yes, in case you were wondering, it’s the beginning of the winter strawberry season. Just in time for Valentine’s Day.
