February showers bring March flowers. Maybe? The rain was unfortunately a setback for strawberry growers but with sunnier weather on the way, look for more strawberries to compliment the vibrant rainbow of citrus season at its peak from tangerines to cara cara oranges, grapefruits to kumquats, lemons, and limes. Who ever said an orange is just an orange was not so very adventurous. Try a new variety. There’s lot to choose from. You might just find a new favorite. Add orange or tangerine slices to your favorite salad or stir fry and add a little sunshine to your dish.
A new favorite at the farmers market is sprouting cauliflower. The beautiful flavorful bouquets are fun to eat and easy to prepare. Just chop into smaller florets, toss in a pan with olive oil, sauté for just a few minutes, season with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt and serve. Deliciously nutty and quite extraordinary as a side dish. But if that’s not where your heart is and you’re looking to celebrate the luck of the Irish instead, the farmers have lots of incredible cabbages at the market available for St. Patrick’s Day dishes all month long.
Main Street and Pico Markets are currently accepting applications for food vendors through mid-March. The team is excited to welcome new food vendors to our community markets. Check the website for more details.
In the meantime, look for returning farmers and pop ups and a few other surprises coming soon including Harry’s Berries at the Main Street Farmers Market mid-March.
