On May 29 at approximately 10:15 p.m., Santa Monica police officers responded to assist the Santa Monica College Police Department with a call of a DUI investigation in the 1700 block of Pearl Street.
Upon arrival, officers noticed a driver sitting in a car that was parked diagonally across two parking spaces. According to the SMC officer, he responded to a call of a vehicle horn going off when he found a running vehicle and the driver, later identified as Katherine Maier, 63 of San Diego, asleep on the steering wheel.
When Maier was asked to exit the vehicle, she had a difficult time balancing and the officer smelled a strong alcoholic odor comingfrom her breath and person.
The subject stated that she had just had one beer while at the beach with a friend and was looking for a safe place to sleep. Upon a closer inspection of the vehicle, numerous empty and open containers of alcohol were found in the car.
Maier was booked for driving under the influence of alcohol. Her bail was set at $25,000.
