Incident of the day
On Feb. 16 at 9:10 p.m., officers responded to a report of a disturbance at Sketchers located at 1343 Third Street Promenade.
Store employees said a man was just in the store, selected two pairs of shoes and left without paying for them.
The employees said they initially stopped the man before he left the store with the unpaid shoes but then let him go when he asked them, "What do you want to do? You wanna catch a fade?" — slang for fighting. Fearing for their safety, the employees moved away from the suspect and the suspect left the store without paying for the shoes.
The employees called the police and gave a description of the suspect. Officers located the suspect at the intersection of 5th Street and Wilshire and detained him until he was positively identified.
Officers placed the subject, later identified as Pierre Lamont Matchem, under arrest for robbery and transported him to the Santa Monica Jail. While at the jail, officers learned Matchem was already on probation for robbery. He was held without bail.
