The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School district will be hosting its second Special Education Spring Forum on Saturday, May 2 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the John Adams Middle School cafeteria.
Per recommendations from the forum held in the fall, the meeting’s discussion will focus on level-to-level transitions for special education students, informing parents and community members about the options available at various junctures and facilitating dialog on the challenges of such transitions.
Keynote speakers will include Brad Silverman and Petite Konstantin from L.A. GOAL, an organization that provides educational, vocational and recreational programs to adults with developmental disabilities.
As part of an ongoing effort by SMMUSD Superintendent Tim Cuneo called the “SMMUSD Special Education Collaborative – Working Collaboratively for 21st Century Special Education Students,” which utilizes a series of initiatives and public events to develop new ideas for how to educate students with developmental disabilities.
The efforts come as a result of recommendations lined out in the March 2008 independent evaluation of the special education program by Lou Barber & Associates.
