On Dec. 10 at approximately 4 a.m., a Santa Monica police officer from the Homeless Liaison Program was patrolling the downtown area and traveling southbound in the 1200 block of 3rd Court when he saw a backpack on the ground near the mouth of the alley at Arizona Avenue.
As the officer got closer, he saw the suspect kneeling down next to some bicycles that were parked at a bike rack and noticed he appeared to be pulling on the cable locks that secured them to the rack. When asked, the suspect claimed the bikes belonged to his friend.
The officer then noticed the suspect had a pair of wire cutters in his hand and that one of the cables had some cuts on it. The officer then took the suspect into custody for the attempted theft of a bicycle.
While searching the suspect's belongings, officers found two meth pipes; methamphetamine; two checkbooks that belonged to someone else; and some property that appeared to have been stolen from a store. Officers also discovered the suspect had a no-bail warrant stemming from a sexual assault and criminal threats incident that occurred earlier in the year.
Rickelldrick Treyon White, 27, of Los Angeles, was charged with attempted bike theft and possession of methamphetamine. He was held without bail.
