IRVINE — Santa Monica High School's softball team won its first ever California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section title in the sport by routing two-time defending champ North Torrance, 11-3, Saturday in the Division 4 final.
The game was highlighted by Samohi catcher Emma Woo, who hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning to put the Vikings in the lead for good. Pitcher Celisha Walker pitched a complete game to earn the victory.
The title was not only the first for Samohi, but also for Head Coach Debbie Skaggs, who is retiring after 24 years of leading the team.
"I'm just speechless," Skaggs said after the game.
