The tragic day that shocked Americans nationwide is coming up on its 10th anniversary. On Sep. 11, 2001, 2,997 people were killed during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Of the thousands who lost their lives, five people had connections to Santa Monica, city officials said.
To remember the day and honor those who lost their lives, Santa Monica is hosting two events Sunday.
The Santa Monica Fire Department is conducting a remembrance ceremony at 6:45 a.m. that should last for roughly 20 minutes. Four fire stations are participating and visitors are welcomed at any of the locations. Station 1 is located at 1444 Seventh St.; Station 2 at 222 Hollister Ave.; Station 3/4 at 1302 19th St.; and lastly, Station 5 at 2450 Ashland Ave.
During 2001, a total of 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and eight private EMT/paramedics were lost, according to city officials.
The First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica is also hosting an event Sunday. The Interfaith Prayers for Peace promises to bring people of different religions together to help build bridges of understanding, respect and peace. The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. Members of the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths will be present.
