On September 26, a contractor was doing work inside the Santa Monica Police Station when the installer left a cardboard box of intercom equipment unattended. When the contractor returned to the equipment it was gone. Video from inside the station was reviewed by detectives and the suspect was able to be identified. On October 2, the suspect came to the station to retrieve property from the property room. He was arrested without incident. Timothy Michael Hess, 43, homeless, was arrested for grand theft and possession of smoking paraphernalia. Bail was set at $20,000.
