Incident of the day
On March 5 at approximately 3:45 p.m., maintenance workers at an apartment building at the 1400 block of 5th Street saw a suspect enter the subterranean garage there and recognized him from surveillance videos that were recorded during previous burglaries at the same location.
One of the workers kept an eye on the suspect as he walked down to a lower level of the garage. The suspect then tried to cut a lock off one of the tenant's bikes that was parked there.
After notifying their co-workers, the maintenance workers walked down to the lower level to look for the suspect. When the suspect saw them, he ran away and eventually left the building through a stairwell. The workers followed the suspect for a short distance, then flagged down a K-9 officer who was headed to the location.
The suspect was detained and found to be in possession of a pair of wire cutters and a meth pipe. He also had a no-bail warrant for his arrest. Ernest Brass, 54, of Santa Monica, was held without bail.
