Shore Hotel was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the first Santa Monica hotel to bear the sustainable distinction, representatives from the hotel announced Wednesday.
The hotel, which opened in October of 2011, implemented several energy and resource conserving initiatives during construction, such as recycling 50 percent of their construction waste materials and using some local building materials.
In daily operation, the hotel utilizes the Southern California Edison Auto Demand Response system, which automatically conserves energy during times of high-demand. It also features a Green Concierge Program, which provides guests with recommendations and knowledge of sustainable activities, events and services in the city.
“Shore Hotel is honored to receive LEED Gold certification,” said Steve Farzam, chief operations officer of Shore Hotel. “We support ongoing efforts to be responsible and sustainable in every area of our business and through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment and dedication to environmental stewardship.”
The Green Building Council rates buildings on a 110 point scale and verifies that sites are designed and built to be sustainable, energy and water efficient. Gold status is awarded when a site achieves 60 points or more.
