Renters who need assistance but cannot afford to hire an attorney can get some inexpensive legal advice from a Santa Monica attorney who has created a tenant’s rights clinic.
Susan Hartley, a former Airport Commission member and a candidate for City Council, will hold the clinic’s first session Saturday, Sept. 18 at her law offices at 2530 Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica. The new clinic is modeled after the Coalition for Economic Survival Tenants’ Rights Clinic. Hartley has worked as a volunteer at the Saturday clinics held in Plummer Park.
“I’ve long believed there was a need in Santa Monica for this type of clinic,” Hartley said. “Renters tell me over and over that there is no help for them in Santa Monica.”
The clinic will be available on a first come, first served basis, with a limit of five tenants per session. Reservations are required. The clinic will be held the first and third Saturday of each month. A donation of $15 to $25 is requested but Hartley said no one will be turned away due to a lack of funds.
