The District Attorney has filed ten charges against a Santa Monica man who is accused of throwing several firebombs into the streets last weekend.
Korie Paul Schmidt has been charged with seven counts of possessing a destructive device, one count of possessing destructive device materials and two counts of possessing explosive devices with intent to destroy property.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, officers received calls of a person throwing Molotov cocktails throughout the weekend and at about 3 p.m. on Jan. 19 they were told the suspect was near Santa Monica Blvd and Pico Blvd.
“On Sunday, Officers spotted a car matching the description in the area of Centinela and Pico,” said Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias. “A traffic stop was conducted and evidence was found inside the vehicle that tied the subject and this vehicle to the suspect who was seen throwing Molotov cocktails.”
The Sheriff’s bomb squad was called to the scene due to the disheveled nature of the car but the vehicle was eventually deemed safe.
There was speculation that the suspect was targeting McDonalds because the devices were thrown in the area of the fast food restaurant,” said Cobarrubias. “There is no correlation between the two.”
Schmidt is currently being held on $1,650,000 bail.
