PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITY — The Santa Monica Fire Department and Firefighters Local 1109 are putting their traditional navy blue uniforms aside and wearing pink in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The fire fighters have joined with Susan G. Komen For the Cure in an effort to raise money for breast cancer research, local education and screening and treatment programs that impact people in the community every day.
Those interested in donating to the cause can go to www.passionatelypink.org and select the “Give To A Team” tab and search “Judah Mitchell” or “Santa Monica Fire Department/Local 1109.” Mitchell is a captain with the SMFD.
Local or non-local, every voice makes a difference.
In this year alone, there will be over 250,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
Over 39,000 women will die from the disease and one in eight will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The disease affects men, too; 2,100 men will be diagnosed in 2011 and over 450 men will die from the disease.
