On Tuesday, February 22
SMPD officers were dispatched to a home in the 200 Block of Palisades Drive for a burglary. The victim contacted SMPD and relayed that someone gained entry into his home by breaking a window and was proceeding to ransack the residence. Upon arrival officers met with the victim outside the home and could hear the sound of shattering glass inside. Officers then entered the home and found the suspect yelling incoherent statements while holding a frying pan. After attempting to communicate with the suspect with no response, an officer displayed his department issued taser and ordered the suspect to place his hands on his head. He ultimately complied without force and was transported to the Santa Monica Jail. Further investigation determined that the victim returned to his home and upon stepping inside the suspect charged him with a broken bottle, but did not make contact. The suspect, Andrew Hayes, was booked for burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse.
