PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITY — For the month of May the Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit will be on the lookout for driver’s who are speeding on city streets.
Each month, the SMPD is focusing on different driving behaviors that are the primary cause of traffic accidents.
SMPD Capt. Carolin Larson wants to remind drivers that while there may be a posted speed limit, conditions on the road may warrant a lower speed. For example, when it is raining or foggy a driver may need to drive slower than the posted speed limit to make sure they and others on the roadway are safe.
California Vehicle Code — Section 22350 states:
No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.
