A construction crew working on the St. Monica Catholic Church's major building project hit a 16-inch water main Monday, knocking out service to the church and its schools and creating low water flows for nearby residents and businesses, said Gil Borboa, City Hall's water resources manager.
The main, which was installed in 1965, was hit around 3:30 p.m. and was repaired around 2 a.m. Tuesday, Borboa said.
Construction crews are supposed to meet with city officials to identify utilities before digging. Borboa said construction crews working for St. Monica did meet with officials and knew of the pipe.
"It was just an accident," Borboa said.
