Foul smell causes closure
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has posted warning signs advising swimmers and surfers to avoid the ocean for a half-mile north and a half-mile south of the storm drain located at Will Rogers State Beach, near Pacific Palisades.
The warning will be in effect until at least noon on Friday, Sept. 25., pending test results that measure the bacteria level in the ocean water. Water samples were taken on Wednesday.
Public health officials were contacted regarding a foul smell coming from a storm drain late Tuesday.
“We are asking people to avoid entering or swimming in the ocean in the area immediately surrounding that storm drain at Will Rogers State Beach,” said Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, the director of public health for the county. “Our first priority is to protect the health and safety of the people who visit the beach and water areas. Once we determine bacteria levels in the water are found to be within normal ranges, we will remove the beach advisory.”
