On Wednesday April 17, at 7:30 pm, the Soundwaves new music series at the Santa Monica Public Library presents a set of improvised duets by flutist Nicole Mitchell and electronic musician Alex Lough, in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium of the Main Library at 601 Santa Monica Blvd.
Nicole Mitchell was the first woman President of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and has repeatedly won the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls as a flutist and composer/bandleader, among many other honors. She records and performs prolifically as a leader and collaborator, including on the forthcoming 50th anniversary double-album by the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Since 2011 she has taught at the University of California at Irvine, but this fall she will leave her native California to run the Jazz Studies program at the University of Pittsburgh.
Alex Lough is working on his PhD at UC Irvine, studying with Nicole Mitchell, among others. His practice links performance and visual art with sound, making creative use of everyday objects and obsolete technologies and amplifying the resonances of materials and spaces.
Soundwaves is a concert series emphasizing artists who appear on the DRAM (Database of Recorded American Music) streaming service. The Santa Monica Public Library is the first public library to offer this service to its cardholders.
