The Los Angeles Marathon returns to Santa Monica on Sunday but local roads will begin closing in advance of the race.
Road closures will begin Saturday night with the first wave occurring along Ocean Ave. between Montana and Wilshire avenues. Roads on this stretch will be closed to both northbound and southbound traffic beginning at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Temporary No Parking signs will be posted along Ocean with the restrictions and impounding will begin at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
The next set of roads will close at Midnight including eastbound San Vicente Blvd. for the length of San Vicente Blvd. between Ocean Ave. and 26th St. Westbound traffic will be open with restrictions on left turns. No traffic will be able to cross San Vicente during the closure.
A larger stretch of Ocean Ave. will also close at Midnight to all traffic from San Vicente Blvd. to Moomat Ahiko Way.
A batch of closures will begin at 3 a.m. on Sunday including:
Main St. will be closed from Pico Blvd. to Colorado Ave.
Colorado Ave. will be closed between 5th St. and 4th St.
4th St. will be closed in both directions between Colorado Ave. and Broadway until noon.
Southbound 2nd St. will be closed between Wilshire Blvd. and Colorado Ave. Northbound traffic will not be permitted to turn right at each intersection.
Northbound 5th St. will have left turn restrictions between Colorado Ave. and Arizona Ave and all traffic will be directed to Wilshire Blvd. to access the parking garages via 4th St. on Sunday.
On Sunday at 6 a.m. Westbound Olympic Dr. will close between Main St. and 4th St. Eastbound and westbound Olympic Dr. will be closed between Ocean Ave. and Avenida Mazatlán.
Roads will reopen after the majority of runners have finished the race. Officials expect San Vicente to be open around 4 p.m., most others to be open by 6 p.m. with the final closures (Ocean Ave between Washington Ave. and Wilshire Blvd.) ending at about 9 p.m.
In addition to outright closures, roads in Downtown will be limited to one-way for the duration of the race. All traffic entering Downtown on 4th Street will be routed west on Colorado Avenue, then north on 2nd Street, then east on Wilshire Boulevard, then south on 4th Street.
While 5th street will be open, traffic may be heavy as the road has been designated as the post-race pickup location for ride-share services. Officials said the system will be similar to an airport terminal with no standing or parking allowed. Riders will have to wait along the sidewalk in a designated area to meet their ride when it arrives.
