For a one time change only, on Sept. 1st, the Committee For Racial Justice workshop at Virginia Ave. Park will be held in the Teen Center at the southwest corner of the park (close to 21st St. & Pico) and will focus on the importance of talking with young children about race.
The Sept. 1st Committee For Racial Justice workshop will discuss how adults can become more comfortable answering the sometimes awkward or embarrassing questions that children ask that relate to “race.” Studies show that infants notice differences in skin color as early as 6 months of age. Toddlers can begin to comment on racial differences. By age 3, children begin asking questions (including racial identity) about themselves and others. By learning about the goals of anti-bias education and the basic concept of fairness, which is important to young children, adults will be better equipped to deal with any encounters, with folks of any age, where the issue of racial justice arises.
This CRJ workshop will include power points, dialogue examples, small group discussions, helpful books for children, and resource folks to assist us all in advancing our antiracism work. Join us for potluck supper at 6 pm and an informative & interesting workshop starting at 6:30 pm. Come and participate in the learning and discussion.
