The Santa Monica History Museum is excited to invite children and their families to their free Hands on History workshop on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Santa Monica History Museum at 1350 7th Street. This workshop will talk about the Old Soldier’s Home, now known as the VA Greater Los Angeles Medical Center, and veterans in Santa Monica.
Located on land originally deeded for use by veterans in 1888 by Arcadia Bandini Stearns de Baker and Senator John P. Jones the Veteran’s Affairs medical center in West Los Angeles has grown into a hub of activity and care for those who have served our country. During this Hands on History workshop participants will get to experience the newly opened temporary exhibit detailing the history of the Old Soldier’s Home including photographs and artifacts that help tell the story of veterans in this area. After the lesson in the galleries, participants will move to the museum lobby where they will create cards to be sent to veterans and active-duty service members to be received in time for Veteran’s Day.
Hands on History is offered by the Santa Monica History Museum on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Each session includes a history lesson and a correlated craft or activity. Each workshop is designed to be engaging and educational for elementary age (5 – 11 years) children. Topics for the workshops rotate throughout the year to feature relevant, seasonal lessons and activities. RSVP is requested, registration is available at the door. Every workshop is offered free of charge.
