Is This Amerikkka? Black Youth Speak Out

The Committee for Racial Justice's January 13 workshop will feature discussions that examine youth engagement in social justice activism using visual and written expression. The topic of the meeting was generated by the appearance of a banner that was mysteriously displayed at Santa Monica High School. The banner appeared to be an interpretation of rapper Childish Gambino's video concept of America ("THIS IS AMERKKKA") as a racist and problematic country.  The students and scholars will also address the emotional effect of the mural in Lemiert Park that was defaced with swastikas.
Joining in the discussion will be youth from Santa Monica BSU;  Dr. Karen Gunn, Psychologist - Educator, Organizational & Management Consultant, Trainer & Facilitator, Leadership & Life Coach;  Fluke Fluker, Teacher/Coach/Athletic Director, Department Chair & Coordinator for AVID-LAUSD;  Chin Nkwocha, Daughter of the Village Nation, Current senior at El Camino Charter HS, Spoken Word Artist, and Co-President of the BSU; and Enkone, the artist who created the Black Panther mural on Crenshaw Blvd that was recently defaced.
