The Most Loved Contest, akin to the People’s Choice Awards, was initiated a decade ago to strengthen ties among residents, visitors, and local businesses, showcasing Santa Monica’s dynamic commercial landscape. Originally established in 2010 with support from the Buy Local Santa Monica Committee, the Santa Monica Daily Press, the City of Santa Monica, business improvement districts, and other partners, the competition has evolved to encompass diverse categories such as Food & Drink, Automotive & Transport, Fitness, Shopping, Neighborhood Favorites, Personal Care and Service.
With time, the contest has seen an uptick in participants and has adopted a two-phase voting system. Free and open to all, voting is accessible to residents, businesses and visitors alike.
The contest is as much about supporting the community as it is about recognizing the businesses because it turns out doing the latter is key to the former.
Supporting local businesses isn’t merely a matter of convenience; it is an investment in the well-being of our community. Studies have consistently shown that when consumers choose to patronize local establishments, a significant portion of their expenditure circulates back into the local economy. Unlike chain stores, which often funnel profits to distant shareholders, small businesses reinvest their earnings locally, supporting other businesses, creating jobs, and fueling economic growth.
Moreover, local businesses are essential custodians of our community’s identity. They infuse our neighborhoods with character and vitality, offering unique products and personalized services that simply cannot be replicated by corporate giants. From the artisanal craftsmanship of handmade goods to the familiar faces behind the counter who know us by name, these establishments are the cornerstone of Santa Monica’s cultural heritage.
