On Wednesday May 22, at 7:30 p.m., the Soundwaves new music series at the Santa Monica Public Library presents a free preview of excerpts from "Vivid Reveries" in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium of the Main Library at 601 Santa Monica Blvd.
Clarinetist Michelle Zukovsky and pianist Gloria Cheng will perform Alban Berg's "Four Pieces," a set of expressionistic miniatures from 1913, and Witold Lutoslawski's "Five Dance Preludes," from 1954, based on Polish folk music.
Michelle Zukovsky has had one of the most extraordinary careers in classical music, joining the Los Angeles Philharmonic at 18 and serving longer than other woodwind player in its history. She also teaches at USC and is featured on several John Williams film scores.
Gloria Cheng is one of the four core artists of the acclaimed Pianospheres series. She has performed as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, at the Ojai Festival, Tanglewood, Carnegie Hall, and other major venues, has won a Grammy and an Emmy, and teaches at UCLA.
This performance is a partial preview of the May 25 Jacaranda Music presentation "Vivid Reveries," which includes additional artists performing Maurico Kagel's piano trio and a Mozart wind quintet. Tickets are available through jacarandamusic.org Since 2003 Jacaranda has presented world-class artists playing imaginative programs of contemporary and canonical classical music, primarily at Santa Monica’s First Presbyterian Church. Soundwaves will offer free previews of excerpts with artist talks the week before most Jacaranda shows.
Soundwaves is a concert series emphasizing artists who appear on the DRAM (Database of Recorded American Music) streaming service. The Santa Monica Public Library is the first public library to offer this service to its cardholders.
