The reason Santa Monica Lions do what we do is because we want to support the Santa Monica/Westside community. This can be through service projects including tree planting (which we did this past week with the other Santa Monica service groups at Crescent Bay Park), providing eye screenings, stuffing diaper bags, or helping to deliver meals, to mention a few. We also hold fundraising events that allow us to provide financial assistance to local nonprofits.
On Saturday, May 7, we will be holding our first Kentucky Derby Day at St. Monica's Grand Pavilion from 1 - 5 p.m. Money raised from this event will help to fund projects at the SM Boys & Girls Club, the Westside Family Health Center, SM YMCA, No Limits Theatre for the Deaf, OPCC, Center for the Partially Sighted, SM High School Scholarships and Camp Teresita Pines, among others.
We hope you will join us in supporting these worthy organizations by attending this fun event that will include classic Kentucky Derby mint juleps, wine and southern-style hors d'oeuvres. For fun we have video-taped horseracing with a live-feed from the Kentucky Derby for your betting pleasure - your $75 registration even includes a $100 players club card to get you started. Final prizes will be awarded to the top three people that are the most successful with their horse selections.
Like to shop? Fear not, we have lots of themed baskets for you to bid on during the event. There is a wide variety such as a yoga basket, cigar connoisseurs basket or a special Namibia basket, just to mention a few. Want to show your creative side? We even have a Kentucky Derby hat contest with prizes for the most stylish or the craziest.
