A fire occurred on the wooden roof deck of a commercial building at 1351 4th St. on Saturday, Aug. 1. The smoke and fire from the occurrence could be seen from the street. Everyone was evacuated from the building before the fire department arrived.
Four engines, a truck company and a battalion chief responded to the incident. According to battalion chief John Nevandro, the fire was out in about 15 minutes.
The decking on top of the building is substantially damaged. But the roof itself is constructed from lightweight concrete, which kept the fire from getting into the building. An office on the fifth floor, which has a concrete floor, suffered very minor water damage.
Why the roof deck caught on fire is still under investigation by the Fire Prevention division.
