Join fellow yachting enthusiasts on July 30 at 12 p.m. for the California Yacht Club's monthly luncheon to welcome Lieutenant Junior Grade James Matthew Hurtt as he takes command of the Marina del Rey homeported USCGC HALIBUT.
LTJG Hurtt, a native of Old Lyme, Conn., graduated with honors from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2012 with a B.S. in government.
He began his career as a Weapons Officer, Deck Watch Officer, Electronics Material Officer and Boarding Officer onboard USCGC THETIS homeported in Key West, Fla.
In 2014, he transferred to Manama, Bahrain to serve as the Executive Officer of USCGC ADAK, one of six forward deployed U.S. Coast Guard patrol boats supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. While Executive Officer, LTJG Hurtt administratively supported a crew of 22 personnel while facilitating coalition force activities in the territorial waters of Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and international waters across the Arabian Gulf.
He will comment on the ever-evolving, worldwide mission of the U.S. Coast Guard and share some of his front line experiences maintaining the peace in foreign waters. Additionally, Skipper Hurtt will provide an update on local boating safety issues for enhancing use and enjoyment of recreational watercraft.
Subject to priorities of the day, the USCGC HALIBUT may be available at the CYC Guest Dock for on-board inspection by luncheon attendees.
The happy half hour begins at noon and a buffet luncheon at 12:20 p.m. with the presentation at 12:40 p.m. $18.50 includes luncheon, tax, service and parking. Open to all who enjoy yachting and adventure, as a public service of CYC. Reservations appreciated.
