OCEAN AVENUE — Santa Monica police Tuesday afternoon blocked off a section of Ocean Avenue as a man threatened to jump from atop the Fairmont Miramar Hotel.
SMPD spokesman Sgt. Richard Lewis said that officers were able to grab the man before he could attempt to jump. They waited the situation out, ultimately making their move once the man sat down and closed his eyes.
Officers wore safety harnesses while on the roof to guard against falling.
Lewis added that the young man was despondent over a relationship and, while intoxicated, made it onto the roof of the building.
Though a crime, Lewis said that charges would most likely not be filed in the case. The man may seek treatment following the incident.
Police did not release his identity.
The man's parents were at the scene, but were unavailable for comment.
Police shut down Ocean Avenue from Wilshire Boulevard to California Avenue around 3 p.m. and reopened the street at approximately 5 p.m.
