SAMOHI The Vikings’ dream softball season continues to bear fruit.
Cal Hi Sports named Santa Monica High School’s Celisha Walker and Kaile Nakao to the All-California Medium School’s First Team this week. Walker was named as a pitcher, Nakao as a shortstop.
“They had incredible seasons,” Samohi Head Coach Debbie Skaggs said. “They are very deserving of those awards.”
The duo, along with a strong lineup, helped lead the Vikings to its first-ever California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section softball title. Samohi won in Division 4 last month.
These latest honors are not the first for the Vikings this season. Walker was tapped as Player of the Year. Nakao was named to the CIF-SS Division 4 First Team. Skaggs was awarded Coach of the Year.
Walker is signed to play for New Mexico State next season. Nakao will play for Hawaii.
The season was the last for Skaggs, who retired after 24 years in the dugout. She said that being away from softball hasn’t set in, but thinks that it will begin to hit her once the school year begins.
The search for her replacement is in its early stages as Skaggs said she has yet to meet with Daniel Escalera, Samohi’s new athletic director. She said there is no front runner.
