CLOVER PARK — In just his third start of the season, Crossroads’ Josh Flyer threw a no-hitter.
The feat came last Thursday during a 10-0 Delphic League win over Kilpatrick that was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.
While Kilpatrick (1-13 overall, 1-2 in league) is far from a world beater, the accomplishment was not lost on the senior pitcher who has never tossed a no-hitter while playing high school baseball.
“I was feeling loose,” Flyer said. “I just tried to stay calm and throw strikes.”
Flyer has been limited on the mound this season. A shoulder injury kept him out of the rotation for the first half of the season, but he returned to pitch during a loss to Santa Monica High School last month and again versus Sierra Canyon two weeks ago.
The victory improved Xrds’ record to 11-7 overall and more importantly 4-0 in league, setting up a crucial pair of games this week against co-league leader Windward.
Game one of the series takes place today at Windward. The 3:45 p.m. game will go a long way toward determining who wins league. Crossroads has not defeated Windward since 2006, before Flyer even suited up for the Roadrunners.
Flyer is expected to start on Friday at home against Windward.
“Windward will be the toughest test for league,” Flyer said. “We’ve never beat them.
“It’s extra incentive going in.”
Samohi softball ranked No. 2<p>
Santa Monica High School’s softball team is ranked second in the latest California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 4 poll.
The poll released Monday has Samohi (19-5 overall, 6-0 in league) jumping a spot from last week. Last week saw the Samohi Vikings win the El Segundo Tournament and three Ocean League games over Hawthorne, Inglewood and Culver City.
Samohi will host Beverly Hills in a league matchup today at 3:15 p.m.
The Vikings currently have a firm grasp on first place with Hawthorne in second with a 4-2 league mark.
New Roads slips in poll<p>
Losers of two of their last three games, New Roads’ baseball team has slipped from No. 3 to No. 7 in the latest CIF-SS Division 7 poll.
New Roads (12-6 overall, 3-1 in league) is coming off an 8-15 loss to Harbor League rival Rolling Hills Prep last week.
Next for New Roads is a non-league game against Vasquez on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The game will take place at North Venice Little League.
