The Los Angeles Marathon Group and Heal the Bay are teaming up to host three races on Sunday, combining running with environmental awareness.
The fourth annual Santa Monica Classic includes two 5K races at 7:30 a.m. (one for runners under 21) and a 10K race starting at 8 a.m. The proceeds of the event go to Heal the Bay. In the past, the races have raised over $30,000.
The races start on the beach, south of Ocean Park on 2600 Barnard Way. All three races pass through Santa Monica on Main Street and Ocean Avenue, with the 10K race continuing on past California Avenue and up San Vicente Boulevard before turning back near 11th Street. All races finish on the Santa Monica Pier.
“Racers will enjoy a great run through the heart of Santa Monica and the opportunity to help keep our coastal waters safe and clean,” Race Director Peter Abraham said. “We’re proud to partner with Heal the Bay for our beach clean-up and the fourth annual Santa Monica Classic.”
The winning high school boys’ and girls’ teams from the 5K under 21 race will receive Nike jackets, and all participants are welcome to the post-race expo on the pier. Everyone running will receive Nike T-shirts.
