SAMOHI — For the second time this week sophomore Natalie Able tossed a no-hitter.
The most recent gem came at Beverly Hills during a 9-0 victory on Thursday. The previous effort came during the Ocean League opener at Inglewood during a 25-0 romp.
With the win Thursday, the Samohi softball team improved its record to 11-5 and 2-0 in league play. The Vikings have outscored league opponents 34-0 in the pair of victories. Samohi did not allow a single run in 10 league games last season and appear to be on the way to another strong season.
“We’re really proud of her effort,” Head Coach Debbie Skaggs said following the game. “She has a few things to work on mechanic wise, but she’s doing a great job for us.”
Skaggs added that the emergence of Able gives her team a formidable one-two punch.
Staff ace Celisha Walker, who had missed the past couple of weeks due to an oblique strain, returned to action. While she didn’t take the mound, she went 3 for 4 with a double and two singles. She also scored a run. Skaggs expects her to take the mound following spring break, which begins next week.
Going the distance
Megan Bradley became just the fourth softball player in school history to hit a home run over the fence at home against Palos Verdes Peninsula on Tuesday.
Samohi won the game, 6-0.
Head Coach Debbie Skaggs, who has coached the team for the past 22 years, said that it was the first homer to clear the right field fence in varsity history.
“She really got a hold of it,” Skaggs said. “It doesn’t happen very often, so yeah, it’s pretty special.”
The right field fence is 170 feet away from home plate, but is guarded by a 20-foot high fence, making the feat a tough one.
