DOWNTOWN — When you buy organic foods Wednesday to maintain your health, you will also be helping a local radio station live a long and fruitful life.
That’s because Whole Foods Markets in Santa Monica and other nearby locations are donating 5 percent of their net sales Wednesday to public radio station 89.9 FM — KCRW.
“KCRW shares many of the same values as Whole Foods Market, such as supporting the local community, educating our stakeholders, and an appreciation and love for food and the arts. We are so proud to be partners in this venture.” said Marci Frumkin, marketing director for Whole Foods Market.
Whole Foods Market provides several “5% Community Giving Days” throughout the year in an effort to continue supporting each individual store’s local community and nonprofit organizations. Stores are allowed to decide for themselves which local nonprofits to support. They are encouraged to choose organizations that hold importance to many shoppers and neighbors in the area.
The company has a reputation for community support. In addition to contributing to nonprofits, Whole Foods often donates food to nearby pantries and shelters, and team members often volunteer their time and knowledge to local organizations.
KCRW, a public service of Santa Monica College, is the leading public radio station in Southern California and reaches audiences around the world. As a public station, most of KCRW’s support comes from listeners, many of whom have been affected by the economic downturn. The businesses that support and underwrite the station have also had to pull back recently, putting KCRW at risk for going under, said KCRW’s Assistant General Manager Jennifer Ferro
“As newspapers and commercial radio stations struggle to survive, we are especially grateful for this vote of confidence in our mission to provide the highest quality news, information, music and cultural programming to our listeners,” Ferro said. “Whole Foods Market’s recognition of the importance of our station in these times really matters, and the portion of the money generated by in-store sales will be put directly to work in continuing that mission.”
