The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion Tuesday to provide weekly budget updates during regular meetings as the county faces mounting fiscal challenges.
The motion, co-authored by Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, establishes a standing agenda item to be delivered by County Chief Executive Officer Fesia Davenport. The updates will inform the board and public about the county's financial standing and budget constraint implications.
"This is a necessary step to ensure the Board and the public understand the County's financial standing, amid compounding fiscal pressures and ongoing federal budget cut impacts," Solis said. "The newly established weekly update will allow us to make informed decisions in direct response to the needs of our community."
Solis said the initiative will provide residents with clearer explanations of current fiscal challenges while promoting transparency, accountability and public trust.
During Tuesday's CEO presentation, Davenport highlighted increasing losses across multiple departments, including Health Services, Public Social Services and Mental Health. She emphasized the need for immediate action and anticipated planning for potential service curtailments.
The county faces ongoing pressure from federal budget cuts and other fiscal constraints that have strained department operations. The weekly updates aim to keep supervisors and the public informed as officials navigate these financial challenges.
The motion represents Solis' effort to facilitate greater transparency in county budget processes as departments grapple with funding shortfalls. Officials expect the regular updates will help inform decision-making and maintain public awareness of the county's evolving fiscal situation.
The standing agenda item will begin immediately, providing consistent communication about budget impacts across county services and operations.
