SAMOHI — Santa Monica High School's boys' basketball team fell behind early and never really made a game of it during a 78-60 loss against Sacramento Sheldon in the second round of "The Tournament" on Thursday.
Sheldon raced out to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter alone en route to advancing to the third round against San Diego Lincoln. That game will take place today at 8 p.m. Santa Monica will move to the fifth place bracket, facing Windward today at 5 p.m.
The Samohi Vikings were led by sophomore Jordan Mathews, who scored 21 points for the second time in two games during the tourney. Holden Foshag added 11 points, also a repeat performance.
Sheldon was led by Darius Nelson who tallied 23 points and helped the Huskies dominate on the boards.
"We'll try to get positives out of [the loss]," Samohi head coach James Hecht said. "Sheldon really took it to us."
The Vikings were coming off a win against CIF-SS Division III state champs Serra in the first round of the tournament.
"The Tournament," hosted by Samohi, is a 16 team tourney featuring teams from across the state. The event is in its first year.
