INGLEWOOD — When Santa Monica High School’s football team squares off with Inglewood on the road Friday the Vikings will be facing a pair of major recruits.
First-year head coach Stephen Thomas said that safety/wide receiver Patrick Onwuasor is being pursued by Arizona and Nebraska. But, Onwuasor isn’t the only Inglewood Sentinel drawing attention. Fellow receiver Derrick Woods is currently being courted by the University of Washington.
Thomas expects the pair of receivers to be the primary targets of first-year quarterback Sean Simmons, a converted receiver himself.
“[Simmons] is a pocket passer,” Thomas said. “We hope to give him time back there.”
The game is the Ocean League opener for both schools. Each team comes into the game 3-2 through the preseason.
Ocean League parity
As Ocean League play opens this weekend, it appears that the league is top heavy.
Santa Monica, Culver City, Beverly Hills and Inglewood all ended the preseason 3-2. Morningside and Hawthorne are 1-4.
Culver City won the league last season with a 5-0 record. Samohi finished third at 3-2.
