CITYWIDE — With fall in full effect, it's time for some high school playoff action.
CIF-Southern Section playoffs for football, girls' volleyball and boys' water polo begin this week with a number of Santa Monica-based teams making the fields.
Girls' volleyball is up first with three local teams making the cut. Pacifica Christian enters the Division 4A postseason as the No. 1 overall seed after topping the Liberty League. The Seawolves host Duarte, the second place team from the Montview League, Tuesday at 7 p.m. at nearby Crossroads.
Santa Monica's girls begin, also Tuesday, by hosting Palmdale at 7 p.m. Samohi won the Ocean League with Palmdale barely making it into the field as the fourth place team from the Golden League.
New Roads will travel to St. Anthony Tuesday, also in Division 4A. New Roads finished the season as the third place team in the Coastal League. St. Anthony enters as the second place squad from the Santa Cruz League. The game begins at 7 p.m.
Samohi's boys' water polo is the lone local team in the sport's field. The first place finisher in the Ocean League hosts the winner of a wild card match on Thursday at home. The Division 4 game begins at 5 p.m.
Both St. Monica and Samohi qualified for the football playoffs. Both will be in action on Friday. Samohi, the Ocean League winner for the second straight year, hosts Templeton, the third place team from the Los Padres League, in Western Division action. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Samohi returns to the playoffs after reaching the semifinals of last year's postseason.
St. Monica football travels to Kern Valley, the second place squad from the High Desert League. St. Monica finished the season No. 2 in the Santa Fe League. The game begins at 7 p.m.
