SAMOHI — Santa Monica's Danny Galvan was feeling it on Tuesday.
The senior starting pitcher threw a no-hitter against Ocean League foe Morningside in a 13-0 blowout at home that was called in the fifth inning.
"It just felt good from the start," Galvan said. "Even if it is a five-inning game, a no-no is a no-no."
The no-hitter was the first in Galvan's career at any level. With the win, Galvan improves to 1-1 as a starter.
Galvan finished the afternoon with 13 strikeouts and three walks.
Samohi head coach Kurt Schwengel was impressed with Galvan's resolve on the mound. Galvan has closed a number of games that highly-recruited Conner Greene has started and has attracted the attention of scouts, who were there to see Greene.
While no Major League team has intimated their interest in drafting Galvan, Schwengel believes that he will play college baseball somewhere next year.
Galvan has already attracted the likes of Washington and Maryland and Schwengel expects more teams to join the pursuit for his services if he isn't drafted in June.
When Galvan wasn't punching out Morningside hitters, he was busy at the plate.
Galvan drove in the first run of the game when he singled to right field, pushing Alex Turner across the plate in the first inning with what would prove to be all the Vikings needed en route to improving to 15-9 overall and 5-0 in the Ocean League. At the plate, Galvan was 1-for-1 with a walk, a run batted in and two runs. He also reached base on an error.
"I'm happy for Danny and his no-hitter," Schwengel said. "It's the ultimate."
After scratching for a run in the first inning, Samohi added a pair in the second and another two in the third — all off of Morningside starter Cipriano Martinez.
Things weren't much better for reliever Miguel Rivas. He entered the game in the bottom of the fourth down 8-0 with the bases loaded and promptly walked Rudy Gonzalez, allowing Galvan to score the game's seventh run.
The wheels really fell off for Morningside in the fifth inning. Rivas issued three walks, hit a batter and let a man reach on an error as Samohi added five runs to their tally making it 13-0. That's when Morningside head coach Doug Otteson had enough and invoked the mercy rule in the fifth inning with the bases loaded with Vikings.
The two teams will face each other again on Thursday at Morningside. The game begins at 3:15 p.m.
