Dear Editor,
Only a couple of months ago the City placed 12 pedestrian crossing signs at six different intersections on Ocean Avenue, warning drivers to be careful and to yield as per State law.
These were welcomed by the community, and, from my observation, helped to mitigate some of the dangers that people faced crossing the street to and from Palisades Park. Now, in a few short weeks, only six of them remain, the rest, having been mowed down by errant drivers, proving that their placement was a good idea in the first place…and that they should be replaced.
Is the City going to do that? Or was this a one-time feeble effort to help protect the many hundreds of people who use Palisades Park and who cross Ocean Avenue daily to get there?
A better choice would have been for the City to install flashing lights for pedestrians to operate at those intersections, but they took the cheap route, despite there being numerous accidents, including two fatalities years ago. But the signs were better than nothing, and if that’s the best the City can do, they should replace them as often as needed.
