A person experiencing homelessness pulled a knife on city councilmember Joe Buscaino during a press conference on the Venice Boardwalk Monday.
Buscaino had just finished speaking to a crowd of more than 100 people about his three-point plan on making the city a safer place for all as a mayoral candidate.
During the event, Venice resident Nico Ruderman said a woman told him that she had a knife. Ruderman said she began circling around him -- and then proceeded to go towards the councilmember.
Police Captain Steven Embrich said they believed Buscino was in danger, which is why they decided to take immediate action.
Embrich was injured while trying apprehend the woman and remove the knife from her hand. He received minor lacerations to his hand.
The woman has been detained. It is expected that she could be released on zero bond.
The press conference was just a few blocks away from where a person experiencing homelessness attacked a 70-year-old man on Sunday.
On Thursday, a security guard was severely beaten by a person experiencing homeless at Arbor Collective located at 102 Washington Blvd.
