BOSTON — The longtime girlfriend of former Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger has renewed her request to be released on bail while she awaits trial for allegedly helping Bulger elude authorities.
A lawyer for Catherine Greig filed a notice in court Thursday asking a judge to consider releasing her.
Defense lawyer Kevin Reddington said he would rely on the evidence he presented at a detention hearing for Greig in July. He also said he plans to file "voluminous documents" to support his request, including real estate appraisals. Reddington has said Greig and her sister would put up their homes as collateral.
Prosecutors say Greig helped Bulger escape capture for 16 years. Her lawyer says she was in love with Bulger and didn't know the extent of his alleged crimes when she fled with him. Bulger is accused of participating in 19 murders.
The couple was apprehended in Santa Monica in June. He was living in an apartment complex on Third Street.
During her detention hearing, Reddington painted a picture of a frightened or meek woman who knew little or nothing about Bulger's crimes when she fled Boston with him in 1995.
"Her only crime is a crime of passion — falling in love with this gentleman," he said.
Reddington did not return a call seeking comment Thursday.
Prosecutors argued during the July hearing that Greig, 60, could easily flee again if she is released on bail. They said that while she was on the run with Bulger, she picked up prescriptions for him using a false name and was present while Bulger had photos taken of himself to make false identifications.
