The Santa Monica Police Department shot a suspected burglar Thursday night.
The incident began at about 6:20 p.m. when officers responded to the 1100 block of Pine for a burglary call.
A resident returned home and found a man inside their home. The suspect pointed a gun at the resident who fled and called the police. The suspect remained in the home and when SMPD officers arrived, they found the suspect in the driveway holding a gun.
The suspect fled into the backyard and refused to come out.
“With the assistance of the LAPD air unit we were able to maintain visual contact of the suspect,” said SMPD Lt. Candice Cobarrubias. “As we made contact with the suspect an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The suspect remained non-compliant and the K9 was deployed. The suspect was then taken into custody. One of our officers is an EMT and provided first aid on the suspect until he was transported to a local hospital.”
Several witnesses told The Daily Press the homeowner is out of town and that the person who encountered the suspect is their son.
The suspect is listed in stable condition. Detectives are still conducting follow up interviews with witnesses and residents in the area.
