Hi I’m Bebe! I’m a 1-year old female Pitbull who is delightfully unconventional. I’m friendly and approachable, but I defy dog stereotypes by being no people pleaser. I love my share of toys, but my interpretation of the game of fetch is that the “fetching” part is optional. I can be social with dogs, but since my manners need work, I can be aloof. But when treats are involved, I’m willing to compromise by showing off my great skill in sit, stay, and down. I’d be best in a home with an adult family who can appreciate an independent thinker. Bebe, ID#A060344, is available for adoption at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter located at 1640 9th Street, Santa Monica CA, 90404. The shelter is closed to the public and adoptions are by appointment only by calling the shelter at 310.458.8595.
PET TIP OF THE WEEK: HOW TO PREPARE TO ADOPT A DOG
Last month’s Clear the Shelter campaign and the COVID-19 Stay At Home Order has led to an uptick in adoptions. Before you adopt, it’s important to know what is involved, and have a plan!
If you are a renter, review your lease to make sure they allow dogs and if there are any restrictions to a dog’s breed and weight.
All dogs, regardless of breed, have unique temperaments. Determine what personality would fit well with your personality and lifestyle.
Many shelter dogs have their own behavioral challenges and health issues. Consider getting pet insurance and be open minded to training your dog. Training is a lifelong process.
If you own a dog, make sure your dog is introduced to the new dog prior to adoption to make sure they will get along.
Make your home dog proof. To prevent injury, illness, opportunities to get trapped or escape, determine whether to remove items from your home, and restrict them from unsafe areas.
Adjusting to a new home can be stressful for dogs. Have a plan for when you bring your new dog home that includes where your dog will sleep, their specific activities, rewards, and their daily routine.
Know your legal requirements as a dog owner. From annual dog licensing, to keeping your dog on leash at all times in the public, there are many pet laws that pet owners must adhere to. Contact your local Animal Control Division to obtain information on your city’s pet laws.
Adopting a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. Being prepared helps to facilitate the process of adoption, ensures they are the right fit for you, and supports a successful transition for your dog into your family.
