Southland shelters that house and feed the homeless in winter months experienced an 87 percent increase in the number of families seeking help, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority reported Monday.
Between Dec. 1 and March 15, the 13 facilities in the Winter Shelter Program provided 309,000 meals and 1,660 beds. During that time, 620 families stayed in the shelters, an increase from 330 in the previous year. Overall occupancy increased 4 percent.
“We’re extremely fortunate to partner with such dependable and compassionate service providers for the Winter Shelter Program,” said LAHSA Executive Director Rebecca Issacs.
“Our collaboration is proof that with hard work, partnerships and sustained commitments, we can make a difference in the lives of our neediest individuals and families,” she said.
The shelters are located in West Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Downtown L.A., Sylmar, Bell, Burbank, Culver City, Lancaster, Long Beach, Pomona, Santa Clarita and the east San Gabriel Valley.
