Not sure what to do with that old computer monitor taking up space in your closet? City Hall has the perfect solution. For one day only, City Hall’s Solid Waste Management Division will conduct a free — that’s right, free — electronic recycle event this Saturday, March 13.
This event is a yearly round-up of electronic waste open to all residents and businesses throughout Santa Monica and the surrounding area. Clear your storage space of technologically deficient electronics by bringing them to the City Yards, located off Cloverfield Boulevard at 2500 Michigan Avenue, near Bergamot Station. The event lasts from 8 a.m. to noon.
Electronic waste should never be left at the curb or in an alley, or placed in a trash or blue recycling bin for collection, city officials said. Most electronic devices contain lead and other toxic metals that could be released and pose hazards to people, fish, or drinking water quality if they are broken. There are also a variety of materials that can be recovered and used again.
Each year in California, hundreds of thousands of computers, monitors, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions and other electronic items become obsolete as rapid advances in technology and the demand for new features accelerate the disposal of old electronic equipment. Enjoy your new toys, but do something good with the old ones!

The Solid Waste Management Division offers a comprehensive drop-off program for residents and businesses, with an electronic recycling program at the Waste Transfer Station six days a week, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
